Corey Tailor described the meaning of the song in 2006, \"I remember exactly where I was. It was 2004, and I was on tour with Slipknot. I was sitting in a European hotel room watching a music video channel, seeing act after act after act of this insane, innocuous, plastic music. They were plastic, bubbly, gossamer-thin groups where it was more about the clothes they wore and the length of their cheekbones than it was about the content of the song they were singing. It made me mad. I was like, 'Is this it? Have we just gone full circle? Did the singer/songwriter revolution never happen? Is it just the same drivel from the same replicate over and over again?' 'Through Glass' is a very angry song. It's me calling 'bullshit' on pretty much everyone involved with the American Idol-type shows. It has its place, but when you're cornering the market and making it very hard for anyone who writes their own music to get ahead, then it's wrong, and that's why I wrote this song.\" [2]

The public's obsession with the lives of celebrities and plastic culture is distracting people from focusing on society's real problems. \"People are realizing now - a little too late - that they let the administration get away with things that are unconstitutional, including pardoning their white collar crime friends. A brain can only take so much before you say, 'Good God, I need to wrap my head around something that I can deal with.' So people go to these innocuous magazines that show the glamorous life. They want to see celebrities' lifestyles; they don't want to know what celebrities think for the most part. They don't want them to be socially conscious because then they have to realize that there is a problem.\" [2]

During the live performance in Sayreville, New Jersey on September 12, 2011, Corey added that the song was written in Sweden after \"the worst case of food poisoning.\" He stated that it was the top three worst days in his life. He was so exhausted that he laid on a bed and stared at the tv set that was stuck on MTV Europe. The next day he got a little strength back, and the first thing he did was writing a song about MTV Europe and its terrible music. This song became \"Through Glass.\"

Techniques

The song has the following structure:

The intro chorus starts with several acoustic arpeggios then chord strumming begins.

Chord strumming (but with another rhythmic pattern) continues in the first verse. There the clean electric guitar enters with several natural harmonics. The first pre-chorus is based on the same techniques.

In the second chorus, the clean electric guitar line is played with single notes and double stops.

The rhythm part of the second verse is the same as in the first verse, but the clean guitar line is a new one but also includes natural harmonics.

In the second pre-chorus, the clean electric guitar starts playing octave chords.

In the third chorus, the distorted electric guitar and bass guitar come in. The distorted guitar plays the same line as the acoustic guitar played in the second chorus, while clean electric guitar lines include several arpeggio lines and single-note lines with slides.
